My Ph.D. is in American Studies (U.S. History and Literature) from the University of Minnesota. I have a B.A. from the University of Pittsburgh.
I've taught writing, history, reading, and other subjects for eight years. I've taught college seniors all the way down to high school first years, and have taught AP English and test prep with high school students.
Currently I teach at the University of Pennsylvania. I love teaching writing, because writing opens up opportunities for students to change others' minds - a magical capacity for many young people. I love teaching history and reading because both offer students the chance to develop a more sophisticated understanding of their place in the world.
As a teacher and tutor, I like to set high expectations but provide intensive support and step by step structure to help students to get from point A to B. I center the experience around student likes and goals, creating individualized plans at the outset.
