Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is to build trust with my student, and then to discover their existing skills to build on what they need to work on.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a first session, I will get to know the student to know how they learn as well as what inspires them. I would also assess the student on the subject matter to figure out where we need to go.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I help students become independent learners by making sure I am teaching skills to access new information on their own. In our session, the student will practice the skill, and I will coach them to make sure they are confident in then using the skill on their own.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I will make sure the student can see their growth so they can see what hard work allows them to achieve. If necessary, I will use trackers and/or incentives to motivate as well.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, I am going to try different approaches to help the student understand. I will figure out what will click for the student to make sure they get it!

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

If a student is struggling with reading comprehension, I will help the student first figure out what kind of books they want to read so they are engaged in the learning. I will create opportunities for discussion throughout reading to make sure the student is answering factual and inferential questions. We will also work on oral comprehension as well as written comprehension.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

The strategies I use are to always make sure the students are doing the heavy lifting. They have to be the ones doing the work and answering the questions. I love to work on a white board, and I love to make things into games!

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

First, I would figure out what the student CAN do, and we would always start with a warm-up so the student feels comfortable and safe. We would then tackle harder problems, breaking them down into smaller bits. We will always celebrate accomplishments!

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I will use assessments to make the students understand the materials. These will be extremely informal and just a check for understanding to make sure the student can complete a problem independently before we went on to a new topic.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I build a student's confidence by celebrating as they do well, and showing them they are able to do it!

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I evaluate a student's needs by giving them a small assessment and evaluating their responses.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

As a school teacher, I am constantly adapting material to meet the needs of all the students in my classroom. I adapt to the student's learning style and make sure they are learning in a way that makes sense for them.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I use the student's schoolwork as well as work I have adapted for the session.
