Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

Making sure students understand why what they're learning is important. This helps create a web of knowledge and understanding instead of memorized facts.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Creating healthy habits. Maintaining motivation is the most important skill to become a lifelong learner. Also, I am well-versed in the available resources for students, which helps to expedite self study.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Encouragement! Most students compare themselves to their peers and will find perceived flaws. The only important comparison is the comparison to who you were yesterday. If a student can become better each day, then that is in itself a huge success.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Try a different learning style and ensure a mastery of the fundamentals behind that concept. All too often a student is confused because they can't build upon a foundation concept. Relating a concept to something the student is already familiar with ensures one more path to learning.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would advise the student to read the material as if it were being presented by a friend. Everyone's mind is programmed to understand and follow a story. It strongly influences the way we speak, listen, and formulate opinions. Reading something while trying to pick out possible answers for questions does not allow for comprehension.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Finding the root cause of the struggle is important to be able to get in front of the problem. Also, the student has to see what makes what they are learning important. However, if the student isn't exposed to a variety of stimuli, then it can be hard to relate information. Broadening an understanding of all aspects of learning will help give examples to latch information onto.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Rhetorical questions and having students explain their reasoning are a few ways to ensure understanding. Usually, when walking through their logic processes, weaknesses can be found and bolstered into strengths.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

During the first session, it is important to diagnose strengths and weaknesses. This to me is a simple conversation with the student to find out what they enjoy and don't enjoy to learn about. This can tell a tutor a lot about how to approach teaching in these areas.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I think that students and tutors need to communicate their short and long-term goals. This helps to define what the student needs and provides an outline or plan to move forward with learning.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Practice problems! This is the best way usually to create a mastery of a subject. If you have pathways to attack any question a teacher or exam can throw at you, then you are sure to do well and make great impressions.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Diagnostic tests are important for evaluating the best step to move forward. Also, it's important to be attentive to how a student reacts while learning a new skill. This helps to evaluate how quickly they are learning and their aptitude for the subject matter.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By setting many short-term goals, it can be rewarding to work towards and complete them. These small steps forward will eventually accumulate and provide the student with the gratification that they have built something worthwhile.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Evaluating the student's aptitudes and strengths is important. Also, quickly figuring out learning and teaching styles that the student and tutor can utilize during the sessions. This easily allows effective communication between the tutor and student.
