Q & A
What is your teaching philosophy?
Learning to me is the most rewarding experience.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Teach them how to learn and think.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Motivation comes from different factors. When I have the chance to know the student personal goals, I can work into motivating them by reaching their goals.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I'd understand the weakness or the learning gap, and then find a strategy to solve this weakness by practice.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I would advise them to do comprehension exercises to perfect their understanding. Practice makes perfect.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Having a lesson plan, setting goals and having an initial debate or a discussion about the topic.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
The teach back method. Exercises and evaluation are the most often used methods.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
By showing them their own great work.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
By detecting the gaps and evaluating the goals and demands.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Books, research articles, audio and video, and visual aids are most often used.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
By talking about several things; one is the overall learning reward they will gain out of that subject, and second is the ultimate results they will have when they become an expert in the subject.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Introduce myself and be introduced to the student's needs and goals. Understand the educational background, and detect the learning gaps in the subject of interest.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
By knowing what works best for the student. Each student is different, and tutoring should be designed to meet the student's needs and expectations.
