Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

Everyone learns differently! We work according to your learning style, whether that's visual, aural, verbal or logical.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

First we spend a few minutes discovering your learning style. Then we talk about "problem areas" and work on these, utilizing your strengths.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Rather than give students the answer, I assist them in coming up with solutions themselves by providing hints, tips, tricks and suggestions.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

It depends on the student. Breaks can be earned through hard work.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Break it down in a way that makes sense for the student. Apply real-world examples.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Break the text up into sections. Explain reading comprehension strategies.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Let them try to solve problems themselves first, to ensure that they understand I am there to support them and not to complete work for them.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Apply it to their life using real-life experiences. Use anecdotes. Be excited myself!

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Check and re-check. I ask additional questions. I have the student complete a similar task independently.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Praise and constructive criticism.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Evaluate their test scores and how they solve problems.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I adapt explanations according to learning styles.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Internet tools such as YouTube. Worksheets. Sticky notes.
