My favorite part of tutoring is guiding students into their light bulb moment, when they go "Ah-Hah!" and suddenly understand a concept they've been struggling with.

I tutored with Compass Education and in that time guided many students to higher test scores and increased confidence in their abilities. I do my best to approach the whole student, and to enable them figure out their own best strategies. Connecting information and making it part of a wider context--whether that's an upcoming test or essay writing skills that they will utilize throughout their education--can help students see the practical applications of their work and give focus to their goals. Though I enjoy every subject I tutor, I find delving into the English and Writing sections of the ACT, and the Writing and Language section of the SAT, among the most rewarding. Getting into the intricacies of how our language functions is fascinating. I often find students exclaiming things like, "Oh, *that's* how that works!" or realizing that they already know and use what's being tested, and this gives them the tools to verbalize and analyze their knowledge. I graduated magna cum laude from Knox College, with a B.A. in Creative Writing with additional concentrations in Women's Studies and History. My most recent teaching work is with gifted writers through the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth Summer Program, where for the past several years I've taught an intense creative writing course. Outside teaching, I like to read, crochet, and hike with my dog.
