As an avid writer, reader, and learner, I have developed a passion not only for studying books and words, but also for helping others overcome their frustrations and learn to find joy in the process of writing, analyzing, and understanding literature. While I find words to be infinitely intriguing and powerful, I know that for many the act of writing and reading can be stressful, cumbersome, and let's face it, even boring.

It is my goal as a tutor to 1. provide students with the skill-sets to become more effective writers, readers, and communicators and 2. make literature accessible and applicable in a way that inspires students to not only "get through" their assignments, but to enjoy doing so!
I find this is best accomplished through cooperative learning techniques that are adapted to each individual student's needs, interests, and learning styles. Tutoring, like learning and reading, should be a conversation, one that involves critical thinking and participation on both ends.

A little about me:
I am a recent graduate from the University of North Carolina at Asheville. I have B.A. in Literature, minored in Creative Writing, and have three years of experience working in my college's writing center. At the writing center, as well as with some private tutoring experience, I worked one-on-one with multiple students a day from across a diverse spectrum of disciplines. I have helped students with lab reports, college admission essays, senior theses, literature reviews, persuasive essays, policy memos, and many other forms of writing and analysis. While upper-level writing and reading skills are my area of expertise, per say, I also have experience tutoring elementary and middle school students in reading comprehension, fluidity, spelling, and writing.

Outside of academia, I enjoy painting, seeing live music, hiking with my dog, playing in the dirt, and eating lots of vegetables.

I care very deeply about language, tutoring, and the learning process, and want to work with you or your child to make the tutoring experience as painless, enjoyable, and beneficial as possible!

What is your teaching philosophy?

It is my goal as a tutor to 1. provide students with the skill-sets to become more effective writers, readers, and communicators and 2. make literature accessible and applicable in a way that inspires students to not only "get through" their assignments, but to enjoy doing so! I find this is best accomplished through cooperative learning techniques that are adapted to each individual student's needs, interests, and learning styles. Tutoring, like learning and reading, should be a conversation, one that involves critical thinking and participation on both ends. It should also function to develop and solidify skills that are applicable in many different areas and interactions outside of the academic sphere.
