What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe that anyone can learn anything; the only thing that changes is how much time it takes to learn.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Introduce myself and get to know him/her. Talk about things unrelated to academics for a bit.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I can help a student become an independent learner by instilling confidence.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
We each have our own ways to become motivated. I would first learn what that is for a particular student, and then act according to how he/she becomes motivated.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Patience and perseverance is key! We must keep trying. Sometimes alternative methods of teaching can prove to be successful.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Breaking down sentences and paragraphs so that the student can comprehend the reading piece by piece.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
The utilization of visual aids can be very helpful in teaching difficult concepts.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Helping a student by building their confidence with easy problems and understanding how he/she becomes motivated can be very effective.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I would ask a student to explain the concept in their own words. Based on this, I can determine if a student fully understands a concept.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Starting with easy problems, and slowly progressing to harder ones can allow a student to confidently tackle the most difficult problems!
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Starting with basic and introductory concepts and advancing until the student has issues can help me gauge a student's background.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
Everyone learns differently. Depending on a student's learning style, I would probably change how I teach.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Pen, paper, whiteboard, and markers.
