Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is centered around creating a positive environment for my students. High energy levels and positive and constructive feedback are necessary for every student to gain the confidence he or she needs to learn.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

During a first session, I want to understand my student's needs and learning style. I would start with a series of ice-breaker activities that would allow my student and me to get to know one another. Most importantly, it helps me understand how my student learns best so that I may tailor our sessions in a productive and fun way.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would help my student become an independent learner by equipping him or her with tools and research skills. Every session would include resources and tools to help my student when working independently. Additionally, I would provide my student with exercises to be completed alone so that we can review together at a later time as practice.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Keeping my students motivated during a session is my goal. Maintaining high energy levels, visual activities, and lively 1:1 discussion are all essential. Additionally, providing my students with feedback after every session is also very important for their learning development.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If a student is having difficulty with a concept, I would find different ways to deliver the content. An individual's learning style will determine the best way he or she can grasp content. Also, practice through the use of live exercises can assist with the learning process.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Students who may be struggling with reading comprehension often times need to practice with material that interests them. Making the process fun often makes the "comprehension" component easier.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Fun, fun, and more fun! High energy and promoting confidence throughout the learning process makes every experience successful.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Utilizing outside tools that I have collected and developed over the last 15 years is something that I would promote and utilize during tutoring sessions. These tools include outside resources, exercises, and live activities.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

It is important to acknowledge every learning milestone during a session, whether it is big or small. Utilizing the teach-back method also helps build a student's confidence.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I evaluate the needs of a student by getting to know them as an individual, their learning style, and through a review after every session. This way, I can determine what needs to be focused on during the following session.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I have a wide array of experience in tutoring individuals from all walks of life. From this experience, I have learned that it is important to tailor the learning environment so that the student is comfortable. This is the first step towards successful learning.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

The subjects areas that I currently tutor, I also teach at various grade/college levels. I bring these materials into each session so that the student can benefit from the most up to date materials that include reading and activities.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would tailor the content/curriculum to include something the student in interested in. For example, if reading were an area of disinterest and the student had a passion for NASCAR, then I would bring in reading material about NASCAR so that I can engage the student.
