Q & A
What is your teaching philosophy?
Everybody can learn; however, everyone has his or her own learning style. As a teacher, it is my responsibility to find out the unique learning style of my students.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would introduce myself, set high expectation and rules, and motivate the students to set goals for themselves. After this I would I would start teaching the material.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Encourage students to use resources other than myself! Also allow students to ask questions, let students do their own work, and respect their opinions.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I would work to increase a student's self-confidence by using praise to encourage them. I will be flexible, as well as focus on the student's learning style.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would identify the problem. Why do they have difficulty learning the concept? Is it due to their learning style? If the answer is yes, I would change my teaching and differentiate my instruction. In addition to this, I would reteach the concept and give them more time to work on it. I would ask several questions to help them grasp the concept, and I would also use a graphic-organizer to convey my message.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
To help students who are struggling with reading comprehension, I would use different reading strategies. For instance, for comprehension I could use maps, jigsaw strategy, questions and answers, summarizing strategies, and more. For fluency, I might use strategies like timed repeated reading and partner reading. When working on vocabulary I can use word maps or word wall strategies. I will also ask students to learn a new word every day.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Graphic organizers are the strategies I have found the most successful due to most students being visual learners.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would find a connection between the subject and one of the student's interests. For example, if the student likes sports, I will connect the subject to sports. I would also include technology in my teaching because students love electronic devices, and I would use humor to make the subject fun. I would find games related to the subject so that student can learn and play at the same time.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I would test the student's knowledge through the use of different types of assessments (formative and summative). I would also ask the student to teach the lesson in their own words.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Provide positive feedback when appropriate, and praise students when they do a good job. I would also give students the opportunity to choose some of the activities.
