Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is that everyone can learn. We may learn in different styles and methods, but we are all able to learn.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I use visual aids and the blackboard.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I usually work with them based on what their needs are. Some students need help with writing and others need help spelling.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can help the student become an independent learner by setting long-term and short-term goals.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would keep students motivated by revisiting their goals. Then discuss how they are doing. Do they need to add or subtract things in order to meet their goals?

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would tell the student to take a moment and share what they know about the subject. Then I would ask them what they feel are their stumbling blocks. Then I help relate the skill or concept to something they can relate to.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I like to add visual aids and to allow students to underline words they are not sure about. Then we would look up the underlined words and discuss their meanings.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Building a rapport. Setting goals. Connecting to the global community.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Look at long term goals, or what they want to be in the future.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Visual aids, hand signals, nodding of the head, and open-ended questions.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Say 'great job' out loud. Allow the student to share what they have learned.
