I am a recent graduate from University of Alabama at Birmingham with master's and doctoral degree in Civil Engineering. I have strong background in math, science, physics, statistics and Civil and Environmental and Geotechnical Engineering related courses. I have successfully passed the GRE and TOEFL exams. What is your teaching philosophy?
Teaching is not just an art but also is a technique which helps develop interest in students. My goal is to develop problem solving, critical thinking, and analytical skills, and, ultimately, ability to think creatively and outside the box.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
After introductions, I will make an assessment of the student's knowledge of the subject, and discuss his/her objectives and goals. Based on this information, I can decide my teaching strategy to achieve his/her goals.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Independent learning is achieved by giving assignments and problem sets after every lesson so the student can get a good grasp of the subject.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
In order to keep students motivated, I like to try different teaching strategies, giving real-life examples, discussions, and setting short-term goals and helping students achieve them.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I offer multiple examples, with real-life examples. Sometimes, it is easy to explain it using pen and paper.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Before reading, I will provide background knowledge about the content. After reading, I ask student to summarize important points and supporting details.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Effective communication is a key to being successful; knowing a student's background knowledge of the subject helps me to determine the areas where the student needs attention.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
By providing easy tricks and examples that students are not familiar with is my strategy to keep students engaged in the subject.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Asking follow up questions during the lesson, and giving practice problem to the student to work independently.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Making class material easy to understand; include multiple examples that relate to day to day life; solving problems with students can develop student's confidence.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
By discussing with the student about his background knowledge of the subject and what goals he wants to achieve after learning this subject.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
My teaching method changes as per the student's ability to grasp it, and I use different techniques to find out which technique works best for each student.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
I prefer providing slides as notes, but during lessons I like to explain ideas and theories using a board. With boards, students feel the true learning experience.
