What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy is that ALL students can learn, and I tailor my teaching to meet the needs of each individual I work with.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
In a typical first session, I will meet with the individual to discuss their educational needs and determine the best approach to help facilitate their learning.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Through modeling and coaching. I am but a facilitator who helps direct my students to their own learning.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Motivation is essential for the development of a life-long learner, and I achieve this through positive reinforcement and guidance.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would "back up" the level at which we were approaching the skill until we found the "just right level" to allow for growth to occur.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I help students find their "just right level" and teach them to be thinkers while reading.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
The strategies I find the most successful when working with a new student is kindness and compassion. They need to know that struggling is essential for true learning and that the fact that they are struggling should not deter them.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
To help students become excited about a subject, you need to approach it through their eyes and try to apply their likes to the area in any way possible.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
To ensure that a student is understanding the material, I have them "teach" it to me. If they are able to do this, then they have fully grasped the concept we are working on.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
You build confidence by focusing on their success in the process, no matter how small.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I evaluate a student's needs by performing an informal assessment, as well as having a conference with them.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
My philosophy is all about differentiation. I determine their personal needs and then use that knowledge to proceed with the learning process.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
During tutoring, I typically use the materials that the individual brings with them. If this is not available, once I determine what to work on, I bring my own.
