I enjoy sharing my knowledge with students that are going through the same struggle I went through as a high school and undergraduate student. Moreover, as a student, I witnessed the powerful impact that a good tutor can have on student's academic performance. This inspired me to use the free time of my gap year before going to medical school to help enhance students' performances at school as I realize how critical that can be for their development as a confident and strong individual.
Throughout my long educational journey as a pre-med student, I adopted some studying strategies for my science and math classes that have helped me to succeed as an undergraduate student majoring in Molecular and Cell Biology. I will share those studying tips along with helping students to understand difficult Biology, Chemistry or Math Concepts. I also learned how to study a heavy material during a short amount of time while I was studying for the MCAT. I ended up getting a competitive score on the "Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems" section. Therefore, I am willing to share my knowledge with pre-med students and help them to excel in that section of the MCAT.
I started my teaching experience working as a teacher's assistant for Botany class at American River College and that way I discovered my passion for teaching. Later, after transferring to UC Berkeley, I worked as a Biology Tutor in UC Berkeley's Student Learning Center (SLC), where along with being a drop in tutor, I also held one-hour study sessions once a week that reviewed the recent material covered in the class. Majoring in Molecular and Cell Biology with the emphasis of Physiology, I gained knowledge that allowed me to help students that came to the tutoring corner of SLC and had questions about Biochemistry, Genetics, Physiology, and any other specific classes that involved molecular or cell biology.
During my winter and summer breaks, I tutored Math (mainly Algebra) to high school students; that was one of the most rewarding experiences I have had as a tutor. Having a good foundational knowledge of Math is critical for success in any other science-related subjects. I was happy to have my contribution in building that important foundation.
Now, I am confident that I will be able to help the students who seek help in these areas of study. With my endless passion for teaching and students' determination to learn and succeed, we can reach wonderful results.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

I always put myself in my students' shoes; teachers should always remember that the material that might seem easy for them is something that the student is encountering the first time in their lives.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Talk about myself a little, and ask the student about him or her. Set up a friendly tone and show compassion. Those are the first steps, I believe, to gain the student's trust, which is essential in succeeding and getting the most out of the tutoring session.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can help a student to become an independent learner by ensuring that the student has a complete comprehension of how we came to a specific answer. I will never just tell them the answer without making sure that they can come to the same answer by themselves in similar questions or problems.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I will try a thousand times and a thousand different ways of explaining until the student learns that skill or concept. From my long experience of being a student, I am convinced that there is nothing that a human brain cannot comprehend. It is just a matter of how many times he tries and how well the material is being explained to the student.
