Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

In order to form a successful relationship, we will need to get to know each other. We might play a game to find out interesting facts about each other and see what we have in common. Then, I will want to do an assessment to determine what their areas of strength and needs are. This will help me make informed decisions about the content we will need to cover and make every second of our future time together meaningful.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I want to give my students strategies and skills that will make them successful everywhere, not just when they are with me. I will teach them the strategy and have them practice it with me. After slowly releasing them, they will be able to do it independently and apply it in the school setting without my support.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Constant encouragement, challenging content, and engaging sessions.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I will find the way that works for that student. If the initial way I teach it isn't working for the student, I will continue to find alternate ways of explaining it or demonstrating it until they grasp the concept. The use of manipulatives and movement are often helpful.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

As a reading specialist, this is my area of expertise! I have an assessment tool that I absolutely love using with students. It tells me where the comprehension is breaking down. Once I see a student needs help with retelling, comparing, and contrasting, etc., I will know where to begin and where to draw resources to help them from.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I like to find out which ways they learn best. Many people are kinesthetic learners, and I base a lot of my curriculum around those hands on learners. They will not be listening to me lecture. Students will be involved, and I will be there for support.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I will find what interests them. If they don't like to read, maybe they aren't reading the right books. The book might be too hard, too easy, or on a topic they don't find interesting. They also might not have the necessary strategies to successfully complete the book. Once I figure out what is causing the lack of engagement, I can address those areas and help students love the subject again.
