What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I believe that students tend to do well in subjects that they find interesting, and a great deal of the material may not be appealing to many students. That is why I will find fun and interesting ways to get the students interested in the material; that involves media and/or using current popular cultural references to connect the material.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Reviewing is an important component in studying, and it allows a student to reiterate what they already know. While it is important to study the concepts the student is not familiar or confident in, it is just as important to review concepts that the students know and to apply or connect it to the concepts that students do not know.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
To evaluate a student's needs, I will ask the student first what they need help on. If the student is not very detailed with what they specifically need help on, I will go through every concept with them together to address what areas they need help in.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
My style of tutoring is very versatile depending on what a student needs. If a student is a visual learner and needs help in math, I will create a curriculum that fosters visual aids about math.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
To work interactively with a student who is working on a paper a Google document can suffice because of the interactive nature of the program. I will also utilize a calendar type of planning to ensure that the student has a detailed study plan when they study on their own, and we reconvene to focus on what they learned.
