I have just moved to Portland after having lived for 39 years in Hawaii. For the last 25 years, I lived on Maui and worked as an English teacher at Seabury Hall, a college preparatory private school.
My experiences as an educator have prepared me to be a top notch tutor. I achieved Master teacher status at Seabury which means that I was highly effective as a classroom teacher. Seabury Hall is a school that emphasizes high academic standards and close relationships between students and teachers. Much of my time was spent in extra help sessions, helping students with their essays and their understanding of literary and grammatical concepts. I am an expert at explaining to students the structural principles of good writing and the elements of style.
At Seabury Hall, I spent many years teaching senior English. The course was equivalent to a freshman college level English class, and the great majority of my former students reported that the class thoroughly prepared them for the challenges of college reading, writing, and thinking. As a senior English teacher, I gave one on one help to hundreds of students with their college essays.
Over the course of my thirty year career I have taught students in grades seven though pre-college, public and private school students, and students of widely diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds. I have been an SAT prep teacher and administered an SAT testing site for three years. I was also an AP reader for the English Literature and Composition exam for five years.
Finally, I have taught two 11th grade social studies, history electives and integrated history into my literature units. I am qualified to tutor American, European, and World history.
