Q & A

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would try to gauge where the student is and possibly try to set up a schedule that they would feel comfortable following for a short time.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I will teach them multiple strategies and provide them all the resources that I have to help them succeed.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would ensure them that if they work their hardest, they will achieve. I will try my hardest to offer them quizzes and tests to see how much they have improved their knowledge.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would teach them in as many ways possible to help them understand.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I try to rewrite or re-address each word that they struggle with to help them realize what questions are asking. I teach them strategies to break questions down.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Trying to find out what makes a student comfortable, and trying to make them feel capable of all subject matters.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Sometimes you can't force it. What I find is that the more that you know, the more that you like the subject. I will ensure that I make learning seem easier.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I use a ton of formative assessments.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I provide them opportunities to prove to themselves that they know the subject matter.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I provide pre and post assessments to gauge students' abilities.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I try my hardest to understand who students are as people, and then adopt a training strategy that I believe that will be most efficacious.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I like to use both interactive (online) materials and pen and paper. Online materials allow students to receive quick feedback and allow me to quickly test for effectiveness.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that students need to practice thoroughly, and then try to access harder subject matter that pushes their limits.
