I graduated from Duke University this spring with a B.S. in Biology and am currently spending a gap year working in Durham while applying to medical school. I currently do clinical research on prostate cancer, but my career goal is orthopedic surgery. My most recent tutoring experience was at the Copenhagen International School in Denmark, where I studied abroad. I believe in learning by doing and enjoy working through problems with students, helping them find solutions themselves. Outside the classroom, I enjoy soccer, golf, and woodworking. What is your teaching philosophy?

Every student learns differently. Some are able to soak up lecture information and spit it back out when confronted with practice problems. Others need to fail on problems and work through solutions themselves. Others need guidance through practice problems until they can confidently find solutions themselves. I believe in adaptability in a tutor and in the ability to recognize a particular learning style and reinforce that avenue of learning.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

First, it is important to broadly go over a student's goals. This allows me to come up with a personalized plan for attacking the issues students are having and tackle them one step at a time in subsequent sessions. I think students are often overwhelmed by the massive multi-hour behemoth of a test. A first session is about breaking it down into manageable pieces that can be mastered.
