I received my Master's degree in Special Education from the University of North Dakota in 2015. Prior to that, I received my Bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota, Morris with a major in psychology and a minor in English. I currently teach special education in a center-based program for elementary-aged students with emotional/behavioral disorders. I chose special education because I love working individually and in small groups with students. My background in special education means I have a good understanding of curriculum and content knowledge, as well as strategies for teaching reading and writing. I also have experience creating individual learning plans that are customized to meet the student's needs. As a student myself, I took the ACT in high school and the GRE before my Master's program. I am a strong writer and reader, and have experience with academic writing, grammar and mechanics, text analysis and context.

In my free time, I volunteer at the Humane Society as a dog walker, spend time with my own dog and enjoy hiking, kayaking and spending time with friends.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I use positive feedback and focus on the student's strengths. I also use materials the student is interested in, and then build a tutoring plan around that. I also encourage the student to measure their own progress and to celebrate every small step forward.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I use practice questions, test prep books and outside materials, such as short stories, essays and writing prompts. Once the student has completed the questions, I will evaluate the answers in order to understand which areas they struggle in, and which skills they need to work on.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Depending on my student's needs, I can choose materials that suit their interests and design learning plans that meet their individualized needs and learning style. I can offer students more challenges, or give them more support if they are struggling with a subject. I can offer more repetitions and more practice in difficult areas.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I use test prep books, short stories and essays, and for younger students, phonics readers, flashcards, letter blocks and other manipulatives.
