I have been tutoring for the past 3 years through the University of Arizona for college level courses. I just graduated this past may but would still love to keep tutoring! I majored in Biology and Minored in Biochemistry. My favorite thing about tutoring is helping someone grasp previously challenging concepts while he/she is furthering his/her education!

Q & A

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I find the most effective ways of keeping students motivated are through encouragement and feedback. A student needs to know where she or he stands in their progress, but confidence needs to be built. I have worked with many intelligent students who had skills to succeed. They were not as successful as they would like to be, solely due to the fact that they were not confident in their own abilities.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, I would first ask the student what they don't understand about the concept. If a student cannot target that point on their own, I would ask them to take me through the steps out loud while solving a problem and see where they get stuck. Once the problem is targeted, I like to use metaphors or different examples to make the solution more attainable and make the problem more relevant to the student's background.
