I am a graduate of Whitworth University, with a B.A. in Sociology focusing on cross-cultural analysis.
After college, I worked for Halualani & Associates as a Junior Research Associate. In this position, I was individually responsible for gathering information regarding diversity efforts at a variety of universities across the United States. I created infographics that described inclusivity at the institutional and interpersonal levels, ultimately giving these universities a comprehensive inclusivity grade.
As a Teaching Fellow with Citizen Schools California, I served both in an education role and a data based role. In order to address district-funding shortages, I worked alongside other Teaching Fellows to recruit volunteer teachers, solicit donations to purchase school supplies, and publicize school-based events to increase parent attendance. I created daily lesson plans for students at different ability levels to target specific skill sets and enable students to reach their full potential.
In addition to teaching in traditional classes, I coordinated project-based classes with volunteers to teach students 21st century based skills through projects. This past year I was able to lead four courses, “School of Rock,” “Your School Your Rules,” “Hacker’s Club” and “3D Printing.” Through School of Rock and Your School Your Rules, my class worked on collaboration skills and innovation skills with Hacker’s Club and 3D Printing class. This was an invaluable experience to see my students thrive in classes.
Each of these experiences has exposed me to a different side of the education system, ultimately showing me my passion for education. There are substantial gaps in our education system, and I am dedicated to the resolution of these issues.
