I always cater to the learning style that is most productive for each student I encounter. What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
It is important to establish a strong foundation with each student to form a relationship that they feel comfortable sharing their strengths and weaknesses. I will combine an evaluation over mathematical skills with casual conversation to create a personal bond. We will quickly get started in covering necessary content to begin their future path of success through mathematics.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Each student must achieve a personal level of confidence that assists them in feeling comfortable enough to make independent attempts. It is vital for students to understand that much of their learning will come from making/correcting mistakes. Assisted practice can assure a student that they will be able to work independently and achieve success.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Providing students with review assessments that allow them to display proficiency in prior skills can boost their confidence. Allowing students to create problems and teach the process of how to achieve a solution can display their complete understanding of newly learned material.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Friendly communication is key to making students feel comfortable while learning. It is important to lead students to success to help build their confidence.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would show them real-world applications and how it can be applied to their life.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
A vital check for understanding is presenting the opportunity for the student to become the teacher. If you can teach a skill to someone you are on the road to mastery.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Providing them opportunities to share their previous successes with skills that they are already familiar with. In math many previous skills are applicable to new skills that will be covered.

Ask questions, and assess often.
