My teaching philosophy is a combination of two simple truths about life. We all love to learn and we all love to be good at things: we all love being good at learning. I try to emphasize how to learn rather than simply what to.

As a twin, I learned early on that academic competition and comparison were self-destructive sources of motivation. I had to grow out of the notion that to be good at something meant to be better than my sister, and that learning—stuffing my head full of information—was a means to that end.

One-on-one tutoring is an amazing opportunity because it lets students take a step back from a classroom environment and pay attention to their interaction with the material, their experience as a learner. Learning isn’t passive; it shouldn’t just be about absorbing knowledge, and can't just hinge on ability or talent. Being a good learner is a dynamic process of pushing boundaries, producing work that you’re proud of while hungrily looking for ways to improve.

All this clearly relates to essay writing, but it is also what standardized tests—whether ISEE or SAT—are looking for. They try to get the test taker to think flexibly, to solve weird and improbable problems using their intuition and creativity just as much as their skill or knowledge. However, I still recognize the importance of that knowledge base, and will work hard with any student on concrete test-taking skills.

I’m thankful for this opportunity to learn from you as well. I will always listen and do my best to respond thoughtfully and productively. I will work to impart more than just skills or knowledge—I will help any student learn to recognize the interaction between the two, to recognize their work as self-representation and feel confident in what they create.
