Hi! My name is Rachel and I would love to tutor you in Mandarin or ESL! I have a BA in Mandarin. I also lived in China for 2 years where I taught English to elementary through university students. All of my students' English levels improved tremendously. I have also tutored students who were preparing for the TOEFL exam. Since moving back to the states, I have been tutoring both Mandarin and ESL.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

Teaching needs to be engaging and fun. I believe, if the student is engaged, they will learn 90% more than if they aren't. It is important to create lesson plans that are personalized to the student.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In my first session with a student, I like to start by asking what the student's goals are and what their strengths and weaknesses are. I will then create lesson plans based on their answers.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

It is important when learning a language that you become an independent learner. I would say 75% of learning a language is outside of tutoring sessions or classes. To help my student become an independent learner, I will give them assignments to work on throughout the week that I will "test" them on during our next session.
