Hello! I am currently a student at UC Berkeley, and a tutor to fit whatever specific needs in Math and SAT tutoring that you might have. I grew up in the San Jose, California. My approach on tutoring is very student driven: I try to help out the student as much as I can, and cater the instruction towards how I think they will best learn. However, a student is always welcome to ask me to change how I do things, or a way of instruction if they believe that they will learn more effectively. In the end, it's you, the client, that matters!

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is primarily student driven: that is, the student dictates what he or she wants, and I work case by case with each student to achieve his or her goals. Everybody learns in a different way; it is my job to find the most effective way.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would likely introduce myself, and have them introduce themselves. Afterwards, I'd probably assess their current level in the subject I'm tutoring them in. Factoring in their current level and where they want to be, I'd then give them a rough idea of how each tutoring session would progress.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I believe that the most effective way to help a student become an independent learner is to instill a love of learning and general curiosity for the world in them. If you appreciate learning for learning's sake, rather than just a means to an end, I think that you'll not only learn more effectively, but also achieve your goals.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would tell them to keep in mind their goals. Everyone has a certain goal they themselves want to work towards. Everyone wants to be better. If they falter along the way, it is my job, as a mentor, to help them back up.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would explain the skill or concept in its most base form, and then try to connect it with something that they do understand. By doing this, it would help him or her understand it at a deeper level, and more easily understand it.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would help students who are struggling with reading comprehension by simply having them read more, and read more actively. That is, actively thinking and digesting a book or passage, rather than flying through it. This means underlining, writing questions, highlighting, finding literary devices, and many more tasks. I believe that reading actively is the key to success as a reader.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I don't think that there is a blanket strategy that can be applied here. I think that if you would have to call it that, my strategy is to get to know the student and cater my instruction towards how I believe they will learn best.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would first remind them that just because they're struggling, that shouldn't mean that they're bad at the subject, and they shouldn't hate the subject. If a student struggles to understand a subject, when they finally do get it, it'll be all the sweeter.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would ask the student questions, in the age old form of a test or quiz. It wouldn't have to be as formalized as say a college exam, but there would have to be some sort of check that the student was properly digesting the material.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I would ask them increasingly difficult questions that they have the ability to solve, and after they solved them, have them look back at what they were struggling with before. To be able to conquer something that you perceive as challenging builds confidence!

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I would first try to assess what kind of learner a student is. Does he or she like lectures or more hands on approaches? A combination of little things I notice about a student’s personality creates a profile for me, that allows me to cater to each one's personal learning.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I adapt my tutoring to the student’s needs by seeing what type of instruction they are most responsive to, and focusing on that style.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I would normally use a whiteboard, as well as pen and paper.
