My name is Benjamin Herrick and I graduated from Northwestern cum laude in 2015, majoring in Biological Sciences and minoring in Cognitive Science. I concentrated in Neurobiology in my undergraduate career including the completion of a thesis on the Neurobiology of olfaction, for which I was awarded Honors in the Program of Biological Sciences. I am now working as a tutor with VarsityTutors because, quite simply, I love to teach.
My experience teaching comes from time as a peer tutor in high school as well as volunteering with Peer Health Exchange during college. As a Heath Educator, I went into the classroom and taught health workshops to 9th graders every week. I was trained not only in content, but also in classroom management, bridging language barriers, and engaging students. I have taken from this experience an ability to maintain an enthusiastic and composed environment while being flexibility in teaching strategies and identifying the strengths of students.
I plan to formulate, revise, and execute different lesson plans for each tutor session I lead. I have experience in this from serving as the New Member Educator for Sigma Nu Fraternity. Our chapter was in the process of re-chartering during my tenure, meaning that all the lesson plans had to be created from scratch and submitted for review by the Sigma Nu national office, who held them to the highest standards, in order to procure a charter.
My research in both the Bozza and Richerson labs has provided me with in depth knowledge of biology and cognitive science in addition to extensive problem solving skills. Through awarded research grants, I was given the opportunity to design my own projects, and I often faced roadblocks and challenges that had to be overcome in order to proceed. Solving these problems required understanding of not only Biology but also the related fields of Math, Chemistry and Physics. I will carry the knowledge gained and problem solving experience from these roles into my tutor sessions
I come from a family of educators and highly value learning and understanding. I always aim to remember that while learning styles differ, every individual is capable of understanding. I look forward to getting to know you and working with you to achieve your goals!
