Thank you for taking time to read my personal statement. In short, I am a chemical engineering PhD candidate who enjoys math, science, and learning about new and interesting subjects. I recently received my bachelors degree in chemical engineering from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. In the fall of 2016, I will be pursuing my PhD in chemical engineering at the University of Colorado, Boulder. During my undergraduate career, I have gained industry, teaching and research experience. During my junior year, I worked as a teaching assistant for a core engineering course, Science of Materials. I taught a weekly review recitation and held weekly office hours, which gave me the opportunity to guide students through the course and supplement their knowledge. This ignited my initial passion for teaching. I believe teaching should be "hands on" by involving the student through questions and promoting participation. One-on-one teaching especially should be less lecturing from the tutor and more input from the student. By using examples to clarify and solidify points, concepts can be fully understood and applied to other situations when the tutor is not present.

As a chemical engineer, my favorite subjects are math and chemistry. I am very comfortable with mathematics up through calculus 1, including algebra I & II, trigonometry, introductory statistics, and calculus I. Additionally, I am very comfortable with ACT math and GRE quantitive sections, as I have taken both exams. With regard to chemistry, I can teach general chemistry, and AP chemistry. Outside of school, I enjoy attending concerts, running, and any outdoor activity like rock climbing or hiking.
