I have ten years of experience working in education—as an after-school teacher, tutor, and substitute teacher. In this capacity, I have challenged students to think critically and reach their academic potential. Education is a vital and sacred social endeavor, and a responsibility that I take very seriously. When I work with a student, I aim to engage them fully in the material.
One of my strongest subject matters is language arts. I received my BA in English from Cal State Long Beach, and received my MA from USC's renowned film school. I have a passion for writing and storytelling, and enjoy sharing this passion with my students. I will often provide young storytellers with thoughtful writing prompts and fun story exercises.
Having worked in local school districts, I am well versed in the latest common-core curriculum standards. When it comes to math in particular, the new teaching methods can be vexing and confusing to those of us who were taught conventional mathematic methods. I can work with young students using the language and the learning practices that they're being taught now in countless schools across the area. Math was not my favorite subject growing up, so I try especially hard to make the subject matter accessible to those who struggle with it.
As a bilingual educator (Spanish was my first language), I am quite accustomed to offering instruction to ESL students, and students who struggle with reading and writing in English.
I look forward to working with students, getting to know them, and helping them to achieve their goals.
