After graduating with a full time job from Temple University with a degree in Mathematical Economics, I didn't think I would miss teaching as much as I do now. Through my years at Temple, I was part of many academic enrichment programs. In my second year I spent the semesters and summertime working as a corps member at Americorps' Jumpstart program and Americorps' Black Women in Sport Foundation (BWSF). As a Jumpstart corps member I spent the year in headstart classes working with low-income students to get them kindergarten ready by improving their literary and basic math skills. At BWSF I was a counselor and tutor for students in K-8 grades. After students received their instruction in a particular sport, we offered tutoring sessions in which students completed their homework assignments and/or worked on improving upon skills they needed help in the most in their academics.

I finished the rest of my tenure at Temple as a tutor/counselor at a high school college prep program called Upward Bound. As a tutor at Upward Bound I focused mainly on math. This program is where I realized that I love teaching especially when it comes to math. My students would often come very defeated and over school because of their math classes. I made it my job for them to love and get excited over math. I found that my students just needed someone to break things down in more relatable terms, making math somewhat more desirable to learn.

It is because of my students at Upward Bound that I rekindled my love for math and even changed my major from Biology to Math Econ. I find that when students are struggling in a subject it may be simply because they don't have a solid basis for it. My goal is to make sure each student I have the privilege of helping can come out of the experience feeling more confident and excited about math.

In my free time you can find me out and about with friends enjoying a good meal, sitting on a bench in a park with a nice book, or daydreaming about math problems and other things at the beach.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

If the student doesn't get it, I'm not teaching it right.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I like to first figure out the strengths and weaknesses of the student and find out what helps them learn the best.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I find that by building their confidence and giving them more responsibility with each new practice problem, students become more comfortable to lead the way.
