Q & A
What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy is that every student can learn! We are all students in this journey called life!
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
In a typical first session, I will have the student complete a “Who Am I” web where they share at least three things about themselves. I want to know more about my students, their likes, interests, struggles and whatever else they would like me to know.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I can help a student become an independent learner by asking open ended questions, allowing students the opportunity to think and figure out problems themselves. Being patient with students and allowing them the freedom to express themselves allows them to be independent learners.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I would help a student stay motivated by incorporating his/her interests into the lesson. I would also find out what is keeping students from being motivated and turn that situation into a fun learning activity.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept I will help the student break down the steps one-by-one and assist them in learning a new strategy that will help them with the skill or concept.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I help students who are struggling with reading comprehension by helping them understand the vocabulary within the text, context clues and then address the comprehension on a whole. Students who struggle with reading comprehension often do not understand the vocabulary within the text. Therefore, breaking down the vocabulary will help struggling readers.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would help a student get excited/engaged with a subject they are struggling in by incorporating their likes and interests into the subject matter. I would also provide them with the needed support to overcome their struggle in that particular subject area.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I would give students an informal assessment of the students' choosing to be sure that the student understands the material.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I build a student's confidence by awarding verbal praise and encouragement every step of the way. Also allowing students to self-correct themselves when dealing with a particular subject. This allows the students to assess themselves and see their own thought process at work.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I adapt my tutoring to the student's needs by finding out how the student learns and using that information to adapt my tutoring style to cater to the student's needs.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
During a typical tutoring session I use pencils, calculator, sticky notes and laptop.
