Math literacy is required in today's world to open doors to opportunity. Everyone has the right to learn math. I have had a long career teaching math at the high school level - algebra, geometry, trigonometry and pre-calculus, statistics, calculus, test prep, integrated programs - and have taken many workshops to deepen my knowledge base. I particularly like working one to one with students, acting as a coach to help students improve their understanding and skills. My tutoring experience has included adults returning to school and having to meet requirements of math competency, high school students adjusting to a new situation, and preparing for Calculus AP exam. I have also worked with students from several international backgrounds. I'm happy to serve people in this way!
Other hobbies and interests: 1) I have amassed a huge CD collection of popular music (rock, blues, jazz, country, etc., all eras of recorded music) which I am selling off. 2) I began running about 5 years ago, in Vibram five-fingers, and regularly do 5K and 10K races. 3) I'm committed to healthy vegan eating.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I might ask them to explain what they think they have read, and ask them to look for details that they may have missed. There might be problems that they recognize as similar to this - how are they different?
