For the past five years, I have taught History and English to eighth and ninth graders. My favorite part of teaching is targeting skills and content that students need and finding fun ways to build that knowledge so that my students can succeed. For example, as an eighth grade English teacher, assessment data showed that my students were struggling with figuring out the meanings of words using context clues. Since a dictionary was not able to be used on the test, I taught kids how to be "word ninjas", using their clues (pre-fixes, suffixes, roots, and context) to slice through difficult vocabulary and determine meaning. They had fun, I had fun, but most of all, they showed huge improvement in this skill and we both felt success. In History, my students enjoy that I find ways to make the content exciting through unforgettable stories. I love to read, so I'm always finding engaging texts for my students. I look forward to working one-on-one with students on writing, reading, history, and test prep!
