Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

My philosophy is to put myself in the student’s perspective and try to create a way for the student to remember the material better. This differs for all students but finding a way to connect to them is critical.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would start with an introduction, then assess what they may already know and create a study plan based off that.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I will create a foundation of learning that the student feels confident within him/herself.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Finding a connection with the student, possibly using intrinsic and extrinsic rewards always seems to motivate children.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Practice makes perfect. We can spend time learning the process to solve the problem no matter how long it takes or how hard it is.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Focus is key with reading comprehension. There are tactics to use, such as active reading, that help with this.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I spend time finding out about the child and their interests or hobbies, as this material can help me personalize the teaching style to use.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I will find a way to relate the question to something the student likes.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I will quiz them in a fun, enjoyable way, then convert to a more test-like structure.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Encouragement helps build a student’s confidence.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I am analytical and am good at determining student needs.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I will find out about the student!

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Materials used include pen, paper, and brains! Depending on age, props may be used.
