What is your teaching philosophy?
I strongly believe in independent thinking and active ownership to keep my students motivated. Not only does this keep my students engaged, it aids in their ability to master a subject. I consider mastery of any area as the student’s ability to not only solve and answer problems, but also to provide adequate explanation to their thought process.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
During a first session, I will view the student’s strengths and weakness with a variety of diagnostic tools. Furthermore, allowing the student to express their thoughts on what their own strengths and weaknesses provide great insight. Overall, the student and I would create a healthy study environment where the goal is to improve and perfect. Once the student and I are able to clearly state our goal, we would formulate a plan to achieve it and commence immediately. This process should take no more than five to ten minutes (not including the diagnostic tools).
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
By working with a student and achieving an understanding of their strengths and weaknesses, I can promote different methods. Some of these may include joint learning, while others would give the student ownership of the material. Small assignments as well as critical group thinking are major focal points in my teaching methodology.
