Along with my complete knowledge of the subjects, as evidenced by my academic success, I believe that my past experience would also factor in to why I'd be a great tutor. I worked as a science tutor for my university, and I was also a laboratory teaching assistant, positions that require many of the necessary skills a professional tutor must have.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that you must understand the big picture before you can begin learning the specifics. We must first understand the "why" before we can move on to the "how," and I always encourage my students to develop a conceptual understand rather than rote memorization.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

The first thing I always do is ask he/she to explain a concept to me as if I was a student. Based on that, I can tell whether the student has a firm foundation or if we need to go back and develop more conceptual knowledge before anything else.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I encourage my students to be active participators in all our sessions. They should be able to explain every formula, concept, or idea while they are doing problems, and understand why an answer is what it is.
