Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

I want my students to enjoy the process of getting better. Learning should be fun and rewarding. Improved scores are a great benefit too!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I will identify the student's strengths/ weaknesses and preferred learning style. Then we'll get started on material comprehension and test-taking techniques.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

As a tutor, I will support the student where he or she needs help. Over time, the amount of support needed will diminish until the student is completely independent.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

The best motivational tool is progress. My students will improve greatly and their new scores will keep them motivated!

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Every problem can be learned with the right teaching. The key is usually breaking it down into smaller pieces.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I will help students understand the arc of a passage, recognize patterns, and learn vocabulary.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Finding out what teaching techniques are going to be most effective.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Sometimes, students get stuck in the mindset that they simply can't conquer a subject. I'm here to prove them wrong.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Practice problems and having them explain the material to me.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

My students will pass milestones, one by one, until they have a strong hold on the material. Confidence and improvement happen one step at a time.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I am highly communicative with students and their parents. The student's specific needs are my priority.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I can teach one subject in a variety of ways. Through working with a student, we will find the best teaching methods and learning styles.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I use realistic practice problems that could be / have been used on previous tests.
