Q & A

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would assess their goals while creating an encouraging and non-judgmental learning environment. I want to find out what they want help with while also making them feel at ease.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Rather than doing homework for my students, I give them the tools and strategies that will foster independent learning and growth as we move forward.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

My lesson plans are fun and focused on easily digestible material. Rather than trying to climb a mountain in one step, I will set goals that will keep my students motivated, but never discouraged.

What is your teaching philosophy?

There is no shame in a wrong answer, and even less in asking for help. The best student is happy and motivated, not stressed and upset. I create an encouraging environment in which my students can grow and achieve their goals!

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I will remove any stress or shame from the student, and then break down that concept step by step in an easy and fun way.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I give them test-taking tools and context clues that will help with even the most arcane passage of text.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Identifying a specific goal is my #1 strategy for starting with a new student. Once I know where they want to go, we can create a lesson plan together that best achieves that goal, while eliminating excess stress.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I am an actor as well as a tutor, so I am very well equipped to make a lesson plan exciting, silly, and fun. My favorite teachers always made their lesson plans engaging--I will do just the same for you!

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

After teaching a lesson, I would give students sample questions or materials and in effect, see if they can now teach it back to me.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I build confidence by starting with small and manageable academic goals. In my tutoring sessions we will never bite off more than we can chew, ensuring that my students will be inspired, not overwhelmed.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I want to keep an open dialogue with every student. By talking with the student and his or her parents I get a good assessment of what I should prep for a session. During my work with the student I will further hone that lesson until it is a perfect fit for the student in question. Everyone learns a little bit differently, and I'm here to help everyone!

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

None of my lesson-plans are set in stone. I'm here to adapt to what best fits my student's needs. As we work together I alter my lessons as needed to maximize learning potential.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I generally use literature and test prep books for my lessons.
