What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe in working with students to set a series of attainable small goals, thereby boosting confidence and understanding of the subject matter in a non-intimidating way. I believe in building these small goals on one another to achieve what may have previously seemed like an unattainable large goal.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I like to get a sense of what the student is working on, how they approach studying and what they believe are their strengths, as well as their weaknesses. I like to set small goals with the student and prepare a plan of attack!
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I like to set small, attainable goals. As students achieve these goals they naturally gain confidence. I believe the quote "success is the sum of small efforts repeated daily" applies well to tutoring. By setting small, attainable goals students can build confidence while building towards larger successes.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
For test prep, especially graduate test prep, I try and use only real or very good simulations of real questions. In order to attack these questions, I enjoy collecting strategies from different test prep companies and presenting them to the student. Different strategies work for different students, so I like to present as many good strategies as I can.
