Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

A teacher is just a tool to provide information. The student must take ownership of his/her education.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would take time to get to know the individual. I would see what his/her interests are and hopefully use that to help reinforce the material.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would use personal interests to help push the material.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would share my failures and successes to show that everyone has their moments of struggle, but it only matters how one chooses to persevere.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would help the individual practice or learn a little trick to overcome the difficulty.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Sometimes it is better to take it slow and to go at the individual's pace, in order to get to the final destination.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Repetition and asking as many questions as possible.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would take time learn about the student and hopefully make things tangible for him/her.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would have the student repeat what it is he/she has taken from the lesson.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I would positively reinforce everything the student has learned. I would also try to use the student's strengths to aid in bettering weaker areas.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I evaluate based on progression, from the beginning to end.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I take time to get to know the individual.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I like using visual aids and active participation.
