My favorite subject is math and I have great expertise in it. My engineering degree required me to take an extensive amount of math and I still use it in my career. Ever since I was in high school I tutored/helped other students in math and science subjects. I enjoy teaching and helping others understand a particular subject. I understand the value of practice when learning math or any other subject and therefore my approach for tutoring is to present students with opportunities to practice while being guided.

During college I worked for a program called Urban Scholars where I tutored high school students from ages 14-17 the subjects of math and physics. The program consisted of helping them after their class with homework and preparing them for state exams such as the NY State Regents. The sessions took place at City College of New York. I also did some freelance tutoring in math and English. I prepare practice math problems and practice reading and questions to make sure our sessions were efficient and effective. I am flexible with hours and can make the learning experience efficient and valuable.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

Practice makes perfect!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I provide handouts for the particular subject/topic we will be working on throughout the lesson. If a student needs help with something in particular they can feel free to bring their school book or notebook if they'd like, but it's not necessary. We will initially review the overall goal so we can create a unique path that targets that goal.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I'll teach the student how to get to the answer and not just give the student the answer. The goal would be to develop enough confidence in the student so that he/she is comfortable enough to approach problems on their own. This gets developed with practice.
