Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is that all students are capable of learning. A teacher just needs to find how that student learns best; once that niche is found the teacher and student would both succeed and accomplish great things.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a first session with a student I would want to find out a student's leaning style. I usually like to look at past homework assignments and tests to assess where a student is at and then try out various teaching styles, through mini lessons to see what works best.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I believe the best way is to encourage them to believe in themselves; once they understand a simple problem they start to build confidence in themselves. Once I find what works for them best, I'll see if they are aware that they are more auditory or visual learners and have them use that to their advantage.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

The best way is to introduce new information in an easy to understand format tailored to the student's learning styles. Once, they start to understand the information and produce results they'll start to be motivated knowing that they can accomplish anything.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I try my best to find a way that works for them, and I think creatively to tailor a mini lesson around their learning styles.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

The best thing that has worked for is splitting up the excerpt into paragraphs and analyzing it in chunks.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I found that finding out where students are struggling and identifying their learning abilities has worked the best for me.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I like to get them excited by finding creative ways to teach, like flip books, and working with other creative tools. Also, I’ve found relating a subject to their interests helps a lot.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I like to do mini quizzes or have them teach the material back to me. This I found is the best way to assure that the student understands the information.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I believe by showing even showing the slightest improvement boosts a student's confidence a ton.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I either conduct a mini assessment or look at past quizzes and assignments.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I learn the student's learning styles that work best for them and adapt how I normally teach to fit their leaning styles.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I typically use the workbooks and textbooks provided, but often use supplemental materials if needed.
