I am currently attending the Barrett honors college at Arizona State University. I am working towards double majors in Psychology and Mathematics. I am ultimately striving towards my goal of being a child psychiatrist.

I am capable of tutoring many aspects of studies. My strengths lie in math, reading, writing, ballet, and science. I have over six years of experience working as a nanny and have been a consistent homework helper. In addition, I have been tutoring math at my college and work with several volunteer organizations across the valley as a tutor.

Math is one of my favorite subjects! I am currently working as a math tutor at my college and I have tutored children that I have nannied in every level of mathematics.

I love tutoring all ages and I look forward to helping my students reach their academic goals!

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe in helping students reach the correct answer by themselves with the right amount of support. I think that the student learns so much more by achieving the right answer on their own. I am not going to be there when a student is taking test, so I think encouraging independent learning is vital.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would talk to my new student about what material they are currently covering and discuss any previous assessments that they have completed. We would also go over any areas that they are having trouble in and build a solid foundation to tackle the new material.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I think that one of the most important tools in encouraging independent learning is allowing the student to write out their own work. Writing increases learning and allows the ideas to become more cemented in their memory. I also encourage students to be the first one to guess how to start a problem rather than telling them straight out what the answer is.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I think that it is important to make sure that a student is engaged in their learning in order to increase motivation. I constantly ask my students questions as we are working on a problem to increase their confidence when they answer correctly. Ultimately, confidence will help the student strive to continue their learning.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If a student is having difficulty with a concept, I would present alternative paths that lead to the solution. Every student learns differently, and what works for one student may not work for another.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

For students that are struggling with reading comprehension, I slow down our reading speed and check in with them after each sentence or so, and gradually lengthen the amount of time between check-ins. I think that students tend to forget material if they don't frequently stop and discuss its meaning.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I have found that many students respond well to my current teaching style. I consistently try to engage my students in our lessons and encourage them to ask any questions if the material is confusing. After completing sections of an assignment, I always present similar problems that test their knowledge of the subject matter and tailor our lesson from there.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

If a student was struggling in a subject, I would make sure to ask them questions that they know the answers to. These questions would be related to the ultimate goal of our assignment, and their correct answers would increase their confidence. This surge in confidence would cause them to seek out more questions and complete those with correct answers.
