What is your teaching philosophy?
It’s very rewarding in many ways. First of all, it is rewarding to see a student who had previously not understood anything about the subject succeed. Furthermore, through finding different methods of explaining the material to the student, it allows me to better solidify my own knowledge of a subject. This is rewarding as well.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would ask them about the subject and what their confidence level is in it. I would then try to identify the aspects of the class that intimidate the student the most and begin aiding the student with those sections.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
By helping them with critical thinking skills and giving them the background knowledge to succeed. If you give the student the answers every time they will never be able to reproduce the problem on their own. I find it is better if you explain the steps necessary to tackle a problem, then give the student tricks that will help them best address all the necessary parts.
