Hello. I am currently a 4th year medical student at Western University of Health Sciences. I love medicine and love education, which is why I also feel a calling to help those who share these passions reach their goals. I have 4 years of trained tutoring and teaching experience at high school and college level, and have tutored a range of subjects from high school math, to college level physiology, biology and physics. I would love to assist you with your class or test work as well!
I know that many of these subjects are very difficult, and preparing for big exams can be even more challenging, however with the right approach, any student can maximize their time and potential to achieve better scores, and retain a greater knowledge of the material. I am a huge believer in developing study habits and skills that will further prepare students to succeed in all classes and material. I understand that balance in your life is almost just as challenging. I was a collegiate cross country and track athlete at UC Berkeley, and I still love running even now with the demands of medical school. I had lots of practice doing the juggle of academia and other passions. I am a naturally curious person who will love to assist students working towards their own goals, and preparing them for success in their balance of academia and extracurriculars.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

Giving learning strategies and skills that can be applied to multiple areas of learning.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Talk with the student to agree on some goals, long term and short term, for our meetings.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

With the skills and tips I will pass on, hopefully the student will be able to apply these to not only their current classes, but others as well. Organizing studying with a plan and proper strategies will open up many doors to learning more efficiently with a greater understanding.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Small goals can be achieved on the way to an overall long-term goal. Little victories keep us all going.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I will try and understand from them where the holdup is in the understanding. Then I'll try to find a different approach or a different way of looking at the problem.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Come up with a reading strategy that will help retention and understanding, such as annotating each paragraph.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Setting goals at the beginning to help establish a positive atmosphere and expectations.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Find an interest in the subject, or at least an interest in their success of the subject. For example, do they need to pass this class to get to something more interesting?

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Ask questions; lots of questions. Also have then teach me.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Let them know when they answer something right and highlight their success.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Open each meeting with asking what they would like to accomplish during the meeting. Ask them to provide you with test scores to assess their progress as well.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Every student learns differently. It is the sign of a good tutor to be able to adapt to styles and cater learning to try and help the student learn. Expectations of effort is necessary however.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Textbooks as well as a white board. Internet resources as well.
