I love working with junior and high school students. I particularly love math, science, English, and ACT/SAT Test Prep. Tutoring and teaching math, English, and science for over 25 years has helped me learn many different ways of explaining concepts and problem solving methods. I feel that everyone has an innate ability to understand math, and many other subjects, when presented in a way that makes sense to them. I have a lot of patience and don't jump in to do the work for the students; I look for the way that makes sense to them.
My motto is "Why do more math than necessary", both in math and science, and I show students shortcuts and easier ways to accomplish more in less time. I also don't spend time on concepts they already understand.
The ACT/PSAT/SAT math sections are extremely limited in time, so I teach the students to look for a quick way to solve the problems, and not just reach for the paper/calculator. I integrate memorization skills and explain to them why it is important to learn certain things. I have developed a particular method of teaching and have seen fantastic results - ACT scores improved from 2-5 points overall, with a large number of my students increasing 4-5 points.
All in all, I've been tutoring for free for over 25 years, and paid for the past several years. When I needed to find a job, this was what God put in my lap, and it's been a pleasure ever since. I strive to be more than just a source of information, but a source of positive support and influence in the students' lives. I enjoy every day and every student, and I hope to help students improve their skills and enjoy their learning as much as possible.
