Ultimately, the skills we are building academically are life skills, and they have real-world applications. What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a first session, I would begin by talking to the student for a while about what they expect to get out of our sessions. Then I would ask them more informal questions about what they're interested in, what they do outside of school, and what they hope to do after they graduate. It is important to me that my students firmly believe that this work can help them achieve what they want to do, and I try to make that connection very explicit.
