Hello, My name is Halle Roberts, I'm a former Varsity Tutors tutor that is looking to reactivate my account. I would like to update my personal statement to the below: I am a recent graduate of Marymount Manhattan College ('19) with a dual degree in Psychology and English World Literature. Before moving to the city in 2015, I was a test-prep tutor for L.A.S.E.R. (the Latin American Space for Enrichment and Research) at The Ohio State University. Since moving to the city, I have worked with private families and students on a weekly basis. While I tutor several subjects, my passion doesn't lie with any of them in particular; rather, I am passionate about tutoring students in subjects that they are passionate about -- or, at the very least, passionate about improving in. There's nothing like seeing a student succeed in a way that matters to them.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is that, in order to get results that reflect an individual, you must first treat them as one.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I typically give my students a practice test in our first session. This way, I can gauge where they're at and not waste their time teaching them what they already know.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Ideally, all my students will be independent learners by the time our time together comes to a close. I do my best to promote independent learning from the beginning, taking every opportunity to ask them questions, have them do teachback, and explain their answers to me (rather than vice versa).
