I believe that each student has the potential for success in academics, as long as that student can be encouraged to stay interested in the subject matter and diligent in their study habits. I have echoed this sentiment to all of the students I have tutored over my time as a Teaching Assistant at UCSD as well as a Math and Science tutor at Rancho Bernardo High School. In my experience, using analogies, interesting real world examples, humor, and inspiring passion for continued inquiry has led many of my students to attain their academic goals.

I am a recent graduate of UCSD's integrated BS/MS program. In June of 2014 I graduated from UCSD with a BS in Human Biology and a minor in Psychology. Subsequently, I continued conducting Neuroscience research at a nearby research institute as a component of my MS program, which I finished in September 2015. During my senior year at UCSD and my tenure as a graduate student, I was employed as a Teaching Assistant for upper division biology classes at UCSD. As a Teaching Assistant, each quarter I was responsible for guiding 40-80 students through weekly discussions of the course content. Additionally, I was responsible for holding weekly one-on-one office hours to help struggling students. It was through my experience as a teaching assistant that led me towards a passion for teaching.

Currently I am working as a Research Technician at the same lab where I conducted my Neuroscience research and in the process of interviewing for Neuroscience PhD programs as well as Biotechnology Management Master's programs with the hopes of enrolling in a program that best fits my career ambitions come Fall 2016.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that each student has the potential for success in academics, as long as that student can be encouraged to stay interested in the subject matter and diligent in their study habits. I have echoed this sentiment to all of the students I have tutored over my time as a Teaching Assistant at UCSD as well as a Math and Science tutor at Rancho Bernardo High School. In my experience, using analogies, interesting real world examples, humor, and inspiring passion for continued inquiry has led many of my students to attain their academic goals.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Introduce myself/ my credentials. Identify strengths. Identify weaknesses. Come up with a study schedule. Assign homework.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Inspire them to take initiative and show them how to utilize resources.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Set up a positive reinforcement paradigm either with them personally or with their parents.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Use analogies, real life situations involving the concept, mnemonics, and repetition until the student increases their understanding/ performance.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Ask them to use a structured and methodical approach to something as subjective as reading comprehension. This includes deriving the main idea of each independent paragraph as well as coming up with a bottom line for the passage as a whole. I'd also ask them to pay attention to any potential counter-arguments that an author uses.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Using humor to reach them on a personal level.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Use personal stories and interesting real world examples.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Practice through repetition, and connect their previous knowledge/ ideas to current material in a logical fashion.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Survey for strengths and weaknesses, reinforce strengths and address the weaknesses at a conceptual level first.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Play it by ear and adapt using the student's social/ psychological cues.
