I graduated with Honors from the University of Alaska, Anchorage with a B.A. in Elementary Education and possess a K-8 Professional Teaching Certificate with NCLB Highly Qualified status. I also hold a Master of Science in Learning Design and Technology from Purdue University.
I have over five years of classroom experience in grades K-12 and a proven track record of student achievement through highly effective teaching strategies. I am available for tutoring all Elementary subjects, ESL/ELL, College Essays, Middle School Math, SSAT-Elementary Level, ISEE, and general study skills and test prep.
I enjoy working with students to unleash their academic potential and believe that all learners can excel when provided with a challenging, engaging, and meaningful learning activities. Students learn best when actively engaged in the learning process and therefore I provide hands-on, interactive learning experiences that are conducive to the learner's individual learning preferences. I highly value students as individuals with unique physical, social, emotional, and intellectual needs and ensure my clients feel valued, supported, and capable of success!
Outside of academics I enjoy playing ukulele, beach combing, stand up paddle boarding, and exploring new, off-the-beaten path places!

What is your teaching philosophy?
I involve students in hands-on, project-based learning experiences while utilizing an integrated, thematic approach to incorporating social studies, science, math, writing, and the arts into the everyday curriculum. I believe that all students are capable of excelling when provided with a challenging, engaging, and meaningful learning environment, and learn best when actively engaged in the learning process. I highly value students as individuals with unique physical, social, emotional, and intellectual needs, and focus on developing a community of learners to establish a caring and inviting atmosphere for learning. Students I work with are encouraged to continually challenge themselves and become competent critical thinkers, self-managers, and problem solvers. Students feel valued, supported, and capable of success in order to foster a life-long love of learning.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
It is essential for me to get to know my student's interests, abilities, and learning preferences. A typical first session might include a brief academic assessment and/or completing a learning profile to allow me to get to know the student!
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
It is key to provide direct instruction, offer guided practice, and then gradually release the student to complete independence in a given skill.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
To boost motivation, I present information based on the student's interests and learning preferences, as well as to boost confidence to motivate students as independent learners.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Presenting information in a variety of mediums such as presenting visuals, giving examples, or simplifying the problem helps students master a skill or concept they find difficult.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Explicit instruction of various reading strategies with tips, tools, and opportunities to practice implementing those strategies is a highly effective approach for students that struggle with reading comprehension.
